Registrations Open for the 2018 Non-Surgical Symposium

While it’s true that the health sector in Australia is a highly regulated sector, due to the unprecedented expansion of the cosmetic industry across a multitude of areas, the regulations have not kept up.  Today’s cosmetic industry is vastly different to what it was 20 years ago.  Nowadays, business is booming with Australians said to be spending more than $1 billion a year on non-surgical procedures.

Non-Surgical Symposium (NSS) Australia Scientific Convenor, Dr Tim Papadopoulos, said these changes are why in 2011 the Australasian Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons (ASAPS) sought to bring about a higher standard of practice in the non-surgical space, by providing first-hand educational opportunities to those interested in aesthetic medicine through the invention of the NSS.

“Since that time the NSS has grown into the premier annual event for plastic surgeons, dermatologists, cosmetic physicians as well including the nurse aestheticians, dermal therapists and practice staff.  The Symposium has been a sell-out event since 2015.  In 2016 it was awarded the Best Conference in Australasia, and in 2017 was named a finalist in the Australian Event Awards for Best Conference,” Dr Papadopoulos said.

The NSS is held by ASAPS in partnership with the Cosmetic Physicians College of Australasia (CPCA) and the Australasian Society of Cosmetic Dermatologists (ASCD) and is endorsed by the New Zealand Society of Cosmetic Medicine (NZSCM).

Dr Papadopoulos said the primary ingredient to the success of the NSS is ensuring that those who attend are provided with an extraordinary learning experience from world-leading experts, utilising the latest technologies and techniques available.

“With so much recent attention on the cosmetic surgery sector, patient safety and improvements to its surety are at the very forefront of everything that ASAPS stands for.

“It’s true that there has been a de-medicalisation of the non-surgical space with an influx of providers preying on people’s vulnerabilities by offering cut-price procedures and slick marketing with offers that often sound too good to be true.  This coupled with the fact that people able to pick up their groceries and also pop next door for a few shots of injectables or fillers has caused a fundamental shift away from ensuring patient safety in every facet of the cosmetic surgery arena.

“This is why we believe, at a minimum, people working in this space should attend our NSS to ensure they are being steered onto the right path when it comes to performing cosmetic procedures.

“As part of the NSS, we also run an Anatomical Dissection and Live Injecting Workshop which is open to plastic surgeons, dermatologists, ENT surgeons, oculoplastic surgeons, cosmetic physicians and nurse injectors. It provides an intimate learning experience for attendees under the supervision of Specialist Plastic Surgeons who are all Fellows of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons about how to achieve the best outcomes for patients,” Dr Papadopoulos said.
