ASAPS Specialist Plastic Surgeons are qualified, experienced, ethical practitioners dedicated to lifelong learning.
WHO WE ARE
Choosing to have cosmetic plastic surgery is a big decision. That’s why it’s important to do your research, understand the risks, and know the facts.
ASAPS has been the peak body for cosmetic plastic surgery in Australia and New Zealand for 45 years. We represent over 300 comprehensively qualified Specialist Plastic Surgeons and are committed to making sure you receive the best advice, find a qualified Specialist Plastic Surgeon and experience world-class treatment before, during and after your surgery.
Why is it important to choose a specialist plastic surgeon? Because previously anyone in Australia and New Zealand with a medical degree could call themselves a cosmetic surgeon. As a consumer, this exposes you to a huge range of doctors with extremely varied surgical training and experience.
Legislation to protect the title ‘surgeon’ was passed in Australia on 13th September 2023. This change means that a medical practitioner can only use the title of ‘surgeon’ (including ‘cosmetic surgeon’) if they are registered and completed training in one of the following recognised specialties: plastic surgery, ophthalmology, obstetrics, gynaecology.
ASAPS can offer the guidance you need to choose a surgeon with cosmetic plastic surgery experience and appropriate qualifications. ASAPS Members have eight to 12 years of specialist surgical training beyond their medical degree. Surgeons with this level of training are easy to identify because they have FRACS after their name.
*FRACS are AMC or MCNZ accredited specialist plastic surgeons whose education, training, professional qualifications, surgical competence and ethical conduct are reviews and are consistent with the high standards of RACS. FRACS is a symbol of excellence that you can trust – RACS (Royal Australasian College of Surgeons).
All ASAPS members work with anaesthetists they know and trust, performing surgery in reputable hospitals and clinics. Each of our members is committed to helping you achieve your cosmetic plastic surgeon goals in a safe and caring environment, every step of the way.
