What’s a Non-Surgical Double Chin Reduction?

neck fat
By Dr Johnny Kwei

Did you know that the stubborn fatty area under the chin can now be treated non-surgically with an effective fat dissolving treatment. This is that fat pad that sits behind the chin and adds volume to the ‘turkey neck’ area, giving a fullness to your neck and making you lose the angle between your jawline and neck.

Traditionally, surgery was the only means to rejuvenate this area of the neck through liposuction and surgical neck lift. Now, this is no longer necessary for every patient. In selected individuals with focused fat pads in the neck region, this treatment can be performed in the plastic surgery practice, with a qualified plastic surgeon and takes under an hour per treatment.

The treatment involves a series of tiny injections of deoxycholic acid to the region of concern under the neck. The product is known as Belkyra® in Australia (and as Kybella® in the United States). A minimum of 2 treatments are required, spaced 6 weeks apart, to dissolve the fat in the double chin area.

During your consultation, a customised treatment plan will be drawn up specific to your anatomy. The treatment will be explained in detail before commencing your course.

It is common to experience some swelling and minor bruising after the first course of treatment. It is usually after the second course where the dramatic results would be noticed.

For patients with significant skin ptosis of the neck, and/or with prominent platysmal bands, only surgical treatment may be able to deliver the desired results and your plastic surgeon will do a detailed assessment to see which is most appropriate for your goals.
