Plastic surgery for men is growing in popularity writes Specialist Plastic Surgeon and Australasian Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons (ASAPS) member, Dr Robert Drielsma.
Thanks to modern plastic surgery techniques and the range of highly effective non-surgical medical devices, there are options for men focused on creating natural, masculine looks, some with relatively little downtime. Here are some of the most popular procedures for men.
It takes a lot of work to carve out a six-pack, but not all abdominal muscles are the same, and some people’s abs are just naturally less visible. For those people, liposuction can help shift that stubborn belly fat helping to showcase a more defined stomach.
Male breast reduction
Some men struggle with stubborn fat and excess skin after weight loss, or are forced to live with unsightly and uncomfortable “man boobs”. These issues can impact your confidence and even career choices. Removing your glands from behind your nipples can help flatten your chest. These days fantastic techniques are being used to minimise the visibility of the scar, helping to maintain discretion.
Body lift surgery
Depending on your age, or if you’ve experienced massive weight loss, your skin’s elasticity may not be able to be restored, no matter the amount of heavy weight lifting. If this is your situation, a body lift might be right for you.
A body lift can improve your body contour and give you a more youthful-looking toned body. The results are long-lasting, provided the same body weight is maintained. During the procedure, the excess sagging skin is removed, and the skin is lifted and tightened in buttocks, abdomen, waist, hips, thighs, and arms. Liposuction may also be used to remove fat and improve body contour.
For many men (and women) a chiselled jawline is the ideal. If you have a weak chin; however, it can make your nose look too large and your lower face small compared to your upper face.
Chin augmentation involves enlarging a weak chin to better balance the facial profile and enhance facial aesthetics. A weak or under-projecting chin can give an unattractive appearance. Due to the imbalance of the upper to lower face, a weak or under-projecting chin can give the impression that the nose is too big for the face. Often these people think they need a nose job (rhinoplasty) when the chin is a major contributing factor to their concerns.
Unless you are a hardcore squatter or MAMIL (Middle Aged Men In Lycra) the ability to achieve an attractive, well-defined calf muscle may be difficult. The medial and lateral heads of the gastrocnemius muscles (which make up your calf) can in some individuals be quite ill-defined. For those people, calf implant augmentation is a viable option and is an excellent way to give your legs shapely attractive proportions.
Calf augmentation is achieved by inserting silicone specially shaped implants over the gastrocnemius muscle bellies. There are two gastroc muscle bellies in each calf – inner (medial) and outer (lateral). The operation may be performed using one implant each side over the medial gastrocnemius muscle belly. Or a more effective way is by using two calf implants per side placed over the medial and lateral muscle bellies. The operation takes around 90 minutes with one-night hospitalisation usually required.
You’ve probably guessed from the name, Brotox is a cheeky take on the anti-wrinkle treatment used to treat fine lines and wrinkles, but targeted towards men, or bros.
Anti-wrinkle injections are highly effective at delaying or hiding the effects of facing on the face, so it’s no wonder that men are lining up for the procedure as well. The treatment and the results are similar in men and women.
With more and more of us working for longer, the need to look younger to stay competitive is a real one. Brotox is a quick 15-minute treatment but should still be performed in a clinical setting as it’s not without its risks. In the right hands, your results should be natural and undetectable. You should still look like yourself, just more refreshed.
