39th Annual Asaps Conference

It is with a great deal of excitement that we ask you to mark your calendars and clear your diaries for this year’s Annual ASAPS Conference, which is being held in one of Australia’s most prized and family friendly destinations – the Gold Coast – between the 6th and 9th of October at the Marriott Gold Coast.

The Gold Coast is a landmark on Australia’s east coast, famed for its long sandy beaches, surfing and system of inland canals and waterways. It’s also home to Dreamworld, Sea World and Wet’n’Wild theme parks and the perfect destination for your family to join you while you are at the conference.

The feel

This year’s conference will combine content rich scientific sessions with family friendly exciting social functions that takes advantage of this unique destination. The welcome reception and gala dinner will be once again out of the ordinary that your families are welcome to attend.
The Production House Events will again coordinate the meeting with Suzane Ali and we have all come to expect outstanding events and seamless organisation associated with this combination.

The Petcha Kutcha/ Short Talks on Cosmetic Surgery (SToCS) sessions include 20 slides in 20 second autoforward (6 mins 40 second duration). These sessions are both entertaining and informative and we look forward to your contribution.

Practice managers sessions

The practice management sessions will involve time combined with the plenaries and separate sessions specifically designed for your staff. We will be taking advantage of the beautiful Marriott resort and utilising various venues for these sessions to enhance the experience.

This year we are outsourcing elements of the PM sessions to create a program that is unattainable for most individual clinics. Practice Management, HR issues, Social Media and Marketing tips, Patient Management and Customer Satisfaction and various other topics will be covered.

These sessions are designed to be highly interactive and the Practice Staff will be encouraged to submit examples.

Keynote Speakers

RICHARD BENSIMON, Seattle, USA

Dr. Richard Bensimon is a Board Certified Plastic Surgeon and a member of the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery.

Dr. Bensimon completed his undergraduate studies at the University of Michigan graduating with a bachelor’s degree in Anthropology. He then earned his medical degree from the University of Michigan Medical School. Following medical school Dr. Bensimon completed his residency in General Surgery at Columbia -Presbyterian Medical Center in New York followed by a fellowship in plastic surgery at Montefiore Medical Center in New York.

Over the course of his 20 plus year career, Dr. Bensimon has been a pioneer in developing innovative techniques to achieve superior results for his patients and feels liposuction is a procedure that has advanced significantly. He states, “Liposuction has been one of the greatest advances in aesthetic surgery in my 25 year career as it provides very real results with minimal intervention. The advent of Power Assisted Liposuction (PAL) has furthered the delicacy and efficiency of the technique.”

Dr Bensimon is a patient focused physician. He listens carefully to his patients and their desires, so he is able to give them the options they have to achieve the results they are looking for.

He is the father of three grown children and when he isn’t working with patients his interests include gourmet food, wine collecting, as well as more adventurous activities like skiing and scuba diving.

WILLIAM BINDER, Beverly Hills, USA

Dr. Binder is Associate Clinical Professor in the Department of Head and Neck Surgery at the UCLA School of Medicine and attending surgeon at Cedars Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles, California with a full time private practice in Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery in Beverly Hills, CA. He received his medical degree from the University of Medicine & Dentistry New Jersey/Rutgers and completed a residency in Head and Neck Surgery and Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery at the Mount Sinai Hospital in New York City followed by a postgraduate year of fellowship in advanced training for facial plastic and reconstructive surgery in Los Angeles, California.

Dr. Binder is Board Certified by both the American Board of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery and the American Board of Otolaryngology – Head and Neck Surgery. He is a fellow of the American College of Surgeons, the American Academy of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, and the American Academy of Otolaryngology and Head & Neck Surgery. He has been elected to serve on the Board of Directors of the American Board of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeons, for which he continues to serve as a Board Examiner. Dr. Binder was also on the advisory board for the approval of the use of hyaluronic acids in the U.S.

Dr. Binder has authored over 85 journal articles and edited 3 textbooks on facial plastic surgery and lectures around the world on procedures and innovation in plastic surgery. He is considered the foremost expert in facial contouring and the use of facial implants. Dr. Binder developed the concept of the multilevel face lift, and is among the world’s most experienced rhinoplasty surgeons. Dr. Binder pioneered the research and continues in the development of applying three-dimensional computer imaging and modeling to the field of plastic and reconstructive surgery.

While pioneering and developing new techniques for the use of botulinum toxin type A, Dr. Binder discovered and then published the first clinical research paper on the use of botulinumtoxinA(Botox)asanewandnoveltreatmentformigraineheadaches. Hethen subsequently taught the first courses and training programs in the implementation and use of botulinumtoxin A for the treatment of migraine headaches. The FDA approval and recommended injection paradigm is based on his original patent. As an inventor, Dr. Binder has been granted over 17 U.S. and worldwide patents on medical and surgical devices and pharmaceuticals.

BRYAN MENDELSON, Melbourne, Australia

Dr Mendelson is in private practice at The Centre for Facial Plastic Surgery in Melbourne Australia. He graduated from Monash University Medical School, Melbourne, and Interned at the Alfred Hospital Melbourne, then became a Demonstrator in Anatomy at Monash University for a year. In 1971 he moved to the USA to train in general surgery and plastic surgery at the Mayo Clinic, Rochester, Minnesota for six years. There followed a fellowship at the Institute of Reconstructive Plastic Surgery in Manhattan, New York under Doctors Converse, Rees, Aston and others. He is certified by the American Board of Surgery and The American Board of Plastic Surgery.

Dr Mendelson is known for his contributions on the surgical anatomy of the face. His several important anatomical findings are published in a series of classic papers, on the Surgical Anatomy of the Temple, the retaining ligaments of the orbit and Prezygomatic Space, the Surgical Anatomy of the Mid Cheek as well as the Surgical Anatomy of the Premasseter space and the Jowl. The terms Prezygomatic space and Premasseter spaces were also introduced.

Dr Mendelson is a founding member and Head of the Faculty of the Melbourne Advanced Facial Anatomy Course (MAFAC). www.mafac.com.au , which has conducted more than 14 Cadaver Dissection Courses in Australia and the USA. This anatomical based approach to Aesthetic Surgery has led to numerous invitations to teach and lecture at teaching Courses and Congresses overseas. The importance of understanding the facial layers and of the Sub-SMAS Facial Spaces, taught at the Courses is now included in the major Plastic Surgery texts (Neligan, Aston) as well as in the online version of the latest edition of Gray’s Anatomy.

He has performed demonstration of his anatomical based, Limited Dissection Composite Facelift on 14 occasions as well as on the Tarsal Fixation Technique of Upper Lid Blepharoplasty Surgical Demonstrations performed in Canada, United Kingdom, Turkey, Brazil, Germany, Taipei, Italy (x 2), Spain (x 2), Russia (x 2) & U.S.A (x 2).

Dr Mendelson is a Past President of ISAPS, The International Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery. In Australia he served on the Council of ASAPS for 6 years and delivered the Second ASAPS ORATION in 2007.

Dr Mendelson has published on ‘Ageing of the Facial Skeleton’ and ‘The Long Term Results of Hydroxyapatite Augmentation of the Facial Skeleton’. Submitted publications are on the Biology of Hydroxyapatite and on a Series of 350 Hydroxyapatite Mid Cheek Augmentations.

CONSTANTIN STAN, Bucharest, Romania

Constantin Stan M.D. was born in 1956 in Romania and graduated Magna Cum Laude from the University of Medicine and Pharmacy, Iasi, Romania in 1982.

Dr. Stan was trained in Head and Neck Surgery at UMF Bucharest and Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery at Emergency Hospital “Floreasca” Bucharest, Plastic Surgery Department. He is board certified in both Head and Neck and Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery. He is fellow of many surgery societies including, Romanian Society of Plastic and Reconstructive, French Society of Aesthetic Surgery, Romanian Society of Head and Neck Surgery and Facial Plastic Surgery, ISAPS Society and IPRAS Society. He also obtain his doctorate in medicine with a theses regarding the Role of Radiofrequency in Plastic Surgery of Face and Body.

Speaking fluent English, French and Italian Dr. Stan has been invited speaker at many international congresses and workshops, he has presented on a number of aesthetic surgery topics including breast augmentation and facial aesthetic surgery.

He has published numerous papers and chapters as well as presented multiple plastic surgery lectures on the international level.Dr. Stan owns the Medical Service Clinic in Bacau, Romania and also a second clinic, SClinic in Bucharest. These clinics were established in 1992 and in 2012. Dr. Stan has a number of patents and innovations to his name including the Mono RF Forceps for breast surgery (Ellman International INC.) and Biodynamic Planning Consulting System Computer assisting in Breast Augmentation (former C.A.I.S.).

Dr. Stan has extensive experience of anatomical breast implants for augmentation. He has developed new techniques for use in clinical breast implant surgery (multiplane / multilayers Pocket Dissection) and combination of fat transfer and breast implants for aesthetic breast reconstruction. Further, he is active educating plastic surgeons around the Europe and abroad on the new level of breast augmentation.

Dr. Stan has received awards for his contributions to the improvement of aesthetic surgery from the Japanese Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (Yokohama 2005) the South American Academy of Cosmetic Surgery (Buenos Aires, 2003) , IMCAS and ISAPS.

MICHAEL YAREMCHUK, Boston, USA

Plastic Surgeon with a Cranio Facial background who has a unique knowledge and experience with facial implants and custom implants.

Dr. Yaremchuk obtained his undergraduate education at Yale College and received his M.D. from the Columbia College of Physicians and Surgeons. He received his general surgery training at the Harvard Surgical Service and his plastic surgery training at the Johns Hopkins Hospital. Dr. Yaremchuk completed a craniofacial surgery fellowship at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania.

Dr. Yaremchuk is Chief of Craniofacial Surgery at the Massachusetts General Hospital, Program Director for the Harvard Plastic Surgery Training Program and a Clinical Professor of Surgery at the Harvard Medical School.

He has authored four textbooks, 40 book chapters, and over150 scientific articles. He lectures and demonstrates his surgical techniques both nationally and internationally on aesthetic and craniofacial topics. Dr. Yaremchuk performs reconstructive surgery at the Massachusetts General Hospital and cosmetic surgery at the Boston Center located in the historic Vendome Building in Boston’s Back Bay.

Dr. Brian M. Kinney is a Clinical Associate Professor of Plastic Surgery at the University of Southern California in Los Angeles, CA, USA, and reputable board certified plastic surgeon. A Past President of the Plastic Surgery Educational Foundation (USA), Board Member of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS), Chairman of the Board of Trustees of ASPS, and Deputy Secretary General of the International Confederation of Aesthetic, Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeons (IPRAS). Dr. Kinney is a member of numerous organizations in medicine, science and engineering, including the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS), the Plastic Surgery Educational Foundation (PSEF), the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS), the California Society of Plastic Surgeons (CSPS), the International Confederation for Plastic, Reconstructive and Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons (IPRAS), the International Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ISAPS), the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (AMSE), the American Institute of Physics (AIP), the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers (IEEE) and the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAAS). Dr. Kinney served (as a founding member) the Editorial Board of the Aesthetic Surgery Journal from 1997-2008 and the Aesthetic Plastic Surgery Journal starting in 2009. He co-edited a 2000-page textbook, Plastic Surgery – Indications and Operations that won Honorable Mention for the Outstanding Medical Textbook of the Year in the US in 2009. He has won awards for his professional work, presents and teaches at national and international meetings, serves as a consultant to biotech and engineering companies, and continues to author articles in many journals and textbooks.

HARTMUT MEYER, Hamburg, Germany

After studying medicine at the Hannover University (1980-87) Dr Hartmut Meyer took up Residency at the Department of Plastic Surgery, University Hannover (Prof. Berger) from -93. In 1988, Conferral of a doctorate at the Department of Trauma Surgery (Prof.Tscherne), University Hannover and graduation as doctor of medicine followed.

In 1994 Dr Meyer continued postgraduate studies for 3 months at the Massachusetts General Hospital, Boston, USA, focussing on burn surgery and research on ceratinocytes.

Upon return from USA Dr. Meyer established a new department of plastic surgery as an Assistant Medical Director at the Otto-von-Guericke University Hospital, Magdeburg, Germany (Prof.Schneider). In 1995, graduation as a specialist in plastic surgery followed. From 1995-98 Dr. Meyer worked as Assistant Medical Director at the Department of Plastic Surgery, Friederikenstift Hannover and as Assistant Medical Director at the St. Joseph Hospital Bremerhaven, Department of Plastic Surgery.

In 1997 Dr. Meyer opened a Private Plastic Surgery Clinic, emphasis on Aesthetic Surgery in Hamburg, Germany. Since 2006 he has been a registered plastic surgeon in England (GMC). Regular consultations in London and several workshops and lectures concerning water assisted liposuction followed.

Since 2001 Dr. Meyer has consulted to HumanMed in the clinical development of the water Assisted liposuction device, which was introduced as the “BodyJet” in 2004.

Since then, guests from all over the world visited his clinic to learn this new technique for liposuction. Workshops in England, Sweden, Denmark, Spain, Italy, Russia, Korea, Japan, Thailand, Australia, Brazil, North America have been implemented and helped to establish the technique as “the gentle way of liposuction”.

Within the last years, research is focused on fat refill procedures and the role of fat harvesting within this process. Therefore, special harvesting techniques and fat collectors were developed. Another emphasis was the removal of sweat glands in the axilla via water jet dissection of the skin. More than 900 patients were treated since 2004 with an increase in primary success rate while reducing complications.

MARCOS SFORZA, Brazil

Dr. Sforza has a degree in Medicine from the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, and specialized in Plastic Surgery at the Santa Casa da Misericordia of Rio de Janeiro.

He is currently the medical director of one of the largest private hospitals for cosmetic surgery in Europe (Dolan Park Hospital, UK) and is the senior professor of plastic surgery at the SESA University and visiting professor at the Faculty of Medicine UNIFESO (Brazil). He is responsible for one the few elective internships in Cosmetic Surgery in Europe.

Dr. Sforza has authored numerous works published in leading medical journals, and is regularly invited to speak at international congresses. He was awarded four times in the last five years by the main plastic surgery societies.

His academic papers seek to establish dialogue between different areas of medical knowledge: surgery, human sciences, bioethics, and stem cells, converging on Regenerative Medicine and Plastic Surgery, which are his main areas of interest.

Submission Guidelines

PowerPoint presentations will be required as slide presentations will not be available.

Speakers will be required to bring PowerPoint presentations on CD, or USB stick with them to the conference.

Your presentation must be given to the audio visual team 4 hours prior to the session. It is disruptive to be changing computer connections at the lectern.

Free papers will be Pecha Kutcha style presentation consisting of 20 slides each on 20 second auto-forward total time 6:40 mins. A series of these talks with a “panel” joint session for questions at the end.

These formats are designed to keep the meeting moving, lively and to encourage new members to present without feeling the need to accumulate large numbers before talking. The format will also enforce a concise presentation.

Companies that are either sponsoring or exhibiting are limited to one (1) abstract submission. Independent authors do not have a maximum number of submissions allowed.

Cancellation Policy

Registration cancellations received up to 2nd May 2017 will receive a full refund, less $300.00 administration fee. No refunds will be given for registration cancellations received after 2nd May 2017. As an alternative to cancellation, registrations may be transferred to another person (for the same registration category) before 18th May 2017 without receiving any extra cost penalty.

All fees are in Australian dollars inclusive of GST.

The members of the ASAPS Council, CPCA Board and The Production House Events do not accept any liability for any losses incurred pre, post or during the Symposium due to unforeseen cancellation or postponement. In the event of the Symposium being cancelled, no refunds will be issued. All available funds will be credited towards a future symposium/s held by ASAPS and CPCA.

Registration fee does not include accommodation, meals for partners and extra tickets for the Welcome Reception and Gala Dinner.

Practice staff are dermal therapists and management staff performing non-surgical procedures. All practice nurses and staff must have their registrations verified by a doctor. Registration will only be confirmed upon receipt of verification. Registration costs at the time of Practice Nurses and Staff initial registration will be honoured regardless of the date of the Doctor’s verification.

Please note there is no entry to the industry exhibition hall without registration to the conference.
