Question description

Problem area has always been tummy. If a tummy tuck operation is performed, and this is usually the problem area, where does the fat then deposit? Does it deposit to other parts of the body like hips or thighs?

A tummy tuck usually removes all skin and fat below the belly button. The operation can also involve liposuction for contouring in certain areas around the tummy tuck, depending on the patient and fat stores (upper abdomen, flanks, mons pubis). If a patient then goes on to gain weight, fat will then be deposited in other areas to a greater extent ie non operated areas (arms, upper back, thighs). Excessive weight gain after any operation is likely to negatively impact the result therefore it is best to undergo surgery when your weight is stable.

Dear MN A Tummy -Tuck is a complex but good operation for the fullness of your tummy and for the apron of fat and skin which some patients have. One of the really key components of the operation is tightening of your abdominal muscles. The tendon holding your "six-pack" muscles together runs down the center of your abdomen. It commonly becomes stretched during pregnancy and unfortunately does not shrink back. This leads to a roundness of your tummy which is not directly related to the fat under your skin. Therefore repairing this tendon will dramatically change your shape independent of your tummy fat. Of course you may well have fat and skin removed at the same time. Fat collection elsewhere is then up to you. If you proceed to lose weight or even maintain your weight, then all will be fine. If you gain weight, the fat has to go somewhere. Mother nature (and your genetic make-up) will determine where it goes. In general it will go to other areas of your body which have retained fat in the past.
